German AS/A Level


Advanced Subsidiary [AS]

The Advanced Subsidiary [AS] is studied in the first year. The course covers two modules:

Unit 1 Family and relationships, media, popular culture, healthy living and communication technology.
Unit 2 Oral examination

Advanced Level [A2]

Students can choose to progress to the full Advanced Level [A2] in the second year of study and the two modules covered are:

Unit 3 Environment, contemporary social issues. The multicultural society. Cultural topic.
Unit 4 Oral examination

Methods of Teaching and Learning

The courses are tutored by well-qualified and experienced staff working with a German language assistant. Students often work in pairs or small groups as well as being encouraged to show initiative in their private study. Good progress is made by use of the target language in the classroom.

Methods of Assessment

The four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking - are assessed by examination.

Enrichment

All students have the opportunity to attend cinema screenings and language lectures locally throughout the course.

Resources

The courses are supported by textbooks, CDs, DVDs and a wide variety of authentic material as well as television and radio broadcasts and internet resources. The College’s Virtual Learning Environment Moodle allows students to access pod casts, videos, homework, class work and a wide range of resources prepared and selected by their teachers

Progression

Students combine German with a wide range of other subjects and a foreign language qualification is considered to be a most valuable asset in many vocational areas.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above or the equivalent from four subject areas including GCSE English. GCSE German at grade B or above is essential or German spoken at home.

Charges

Students have the opportunity to subscribe to German language magazines, attend film showings at student rates, etc.
