Curriculum intent

St Brendan’s is committed to providing a curriculum which is broad, balanced and challenging and fosters a love of learning. We match our curriculum to the abilities, interests, and aspirations of our students as well as meeting local need to aid progression routes. The St Brendan’s College curriculum offer provides a range of pathways for students to allow them to progress level 3 qualifications, to university, work or apprenticeships with the necessary knowledge, skills and wider qualities which will help them to be successful in a fast-changing world.

With our curriculum we aim to achieve the following:

The guiding principles of our curriculum are:

· To provide a broad and balanced curriculum offer which enables students to deepen their knowledge and develop their skills to the best of their ability.

· To provide opportunities for frequent retrieval practice so that learning is deep, robust, and long term.

· To provide opportunities for students to develop their spiritual, moral, cultural, social, and personal well-being.

· To help to develop students are resilient and have lively, enquiring minds and the ability to question, to argue rationally to apply themselves to tasks, to develop independent learning and thereby to become life-long learners.

· To further develop communication, literacy, numeracy, and employability skills.

· To help students understand the importance of equality of opportunity for all and to thereby counter racism, sexism, and all other forms of discrimination.

· To ensure that our curriculum supports learners' progression and that they are aware of the opportunities and pathways that are available to them.

Curriculum content

We offer a wide range of level 3 courses. These include traditional A levels and Applied General Qualifications (AGQ) courses to suit the needs of our students. Our level 3 curriculum consists of over 35 A level subjects and almost 20 AGQ. AGQs studied include the BTEC Technical Diploma (equivalent to 2 A Levels), BTEC Extended Certificates or WJEC Applied Diploma (equivalent to 1 A Level). We offer additional routes for further academic study through our offer of core Math's, Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and Goethe-Zertifikat. We are committed to maintaining the breadth of courses offered at the college and are proud of the high standards our students attain through creative arts and music courses.

Whilst it is predominately a level 3 College, we are aware that some students need to consolidate their GCSEs (level 2). For these students we offer the Access to Level 3 programme. Our curriculum at level 2 provides students with the opportunity to study 17 subjects. Upon successful completion of this programme and subject to students meeting our entry requirements, students can progress to our large range of Level 3 courses.

All students follow a Religion, Ethics and Philosophy Programme (RPE), Futures and a tutorial programme. These provide opportunities for students to develop their spiritual, moral, cultural, social and personal wellbeing as well as employability skills.
