Have you ever wondered how a Crunchie bar is made? Or how bath bombs fizz so beautifully? It’s a subject which makes the world function, yet so many of us take it for granted…Chemistry.

To celebrate Chemistry Week 2019, the labs opened their doors and teachers and technicians welcomed the College community to enjoy the subject like never before.

Throughout the week, the team encouraged students to pop in and make their very own bath bombs; moulded to perfection, coloured to personal preference and of course, scented. If bath bombs didn’t take their fancy, students had an opportunity to make their very own ‘frothy toffee’; both delicious and informative! The week ended with a bang as Chemistry Teachers enjoyed showcasing a range of impressive demonstrations which resulted in the obligatory “oohs” and “wows”.

The team even managed to take chemistry out of the classroom with their very own treasure hunt. Officially named as the International Year of the Periodic Table, 2019 marks 150 years of the Mendeleev Period Table.  To acknowledge the occasion, the team hid elements around the College and challenged students to find them with cryptic, element-based clues.
