It was a fantastic day for Tommy Matthews on Thursday, as he opened his A-level results and became instantly speechless; the shock of straight As can have that effect on some students!

Tommy worked hard throughout his time at St Brendan’s; studying Maths, Chemistry and Physics, and on Thursday he realised his hard work had paid off.

Tommy’s future plans are a little different to the majority of students across the country however. Over the next two years the 18 year old will be pursuing his love for climbing and working towards being a part of the England 2020 Olympic Team!

Tommy has been a member of the British Bouldering Youth Team for three years now, after starting it as a hobby when he was 13. Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed without ropes or harnesses – the aim is to get from the bottom to the top of a course whilst using balance, technique, strength and your brain. Climbing has officially been added to the roster for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and Tommy is excited to have the opportunity to represent his country.

After the Olympics, Tommy hopes to go on to University – his 3 As will certainly make his application a breeze!
