Last weekend a group of Year 12 students came together at their inaugural training weekend for their Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Gold Award.

Jam-packed with team-building tasks and activities that helped the students build the vital skills needed to take part in the DofE Gold Award, the day was a big success.

Highlights of the day included working as a team to build free standing structures from spaghetti and marshmallows, taking part in trust fall exercises, and getting in some practice putting up and taking down tents.

The group of students are preparing for a busy 18 months of volunteering, learning new skills and getting involved in their local community, as well as planning for their Duke of Edinburgh Gold expedition.

The award is split into five sections – volunteering, physical, skills, residential and expedition - and students can choose their activity for each.

This year the students have chosen a huge range of areas from football coaching, archery or tap dancing, to embroidery, creative writing and digital 3D art as part of their programmes.

Whilst they focus on learning new skills and helping out in the community, they will also be working towards a big expedition at the end of their DofE Award which will see them hiking the Brecon Beacons.

The training day included lots of physical and mental challenges and success required great teamwork!  The group enjoyed the tasks and teambuilding, and the day proved to be a great start to their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award journey.
