This summer, six students of German from St Brendan’s enjoyed the opportunity to practise their language skills and expand their horizons on a two-week digital summer camp, organised by the Pasch Initiative in collaboration with German universities.

Students on the summer camp had the chance to connect with language learners across the globe, hone their teamwork skills, and interact with native speakers.

As well as practising their language skills outside of the classroom, students also explored the possibility of continuing with their studies, or entering the world of work, in Germany. They had the fantastic opportunity to meet ambassadors from various German universities, and even undertake virtual tours in a variety of German businesses and firms. The two weeks ended with a conference including the presentation of projects the students worked on through the programme.

Sean Aanesen, who is studying A-levels in English Literature, History, and German at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College said, “The virtual summer camp was a refreshing experience, teaming engaging content with enthusiastic staff. It was a highly rewarding enterprise, conversing with other German-Language learners around the globe in a common language, a true testament to globalisation.”

Alongside A-levels in Biology, Mathematics, and English Literature, Niamh Murphy is studying the German Goethe-Zertifikat B1 at College. She relished the chance to practise her language skills on the summer camp.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to use German in a setting outside the classroom; learning about current topics that I found interesting to discuss with others. Through communicating with new people, sharing ideas and creating a presentation in a group, the experience overall improved my confidence with German.”

St Brendan’s is proud to be one of only eight schools in the UK that are part of the Pasch network, a global network of around 2000 schools across 120 countries that place a high value on learning German.

The digital summer camp is just one of the many opportunities that German learners at St. Brendan’s are able to experience through the Pasch network. We are very much looking forward to being able to offer more great opportunities to our German learners in the coming academic year!
