A very varied enrichment programme is an integral part of the Languages Curriculum at St Brendan's.

We are passionate about giving our students the chance to enrich their learning, enhance their cultural understanding and inform themselves about future opportunities through the variety of activities we organise during the course of the scholastic year.

Cultural and Social Activities

We organise a number of cultural and social activities with the aim of promoting languages throughout the College.  To this end activities like our Languages Carousel and our Christmas Quiz are now set items in our enrichment calendar. These activities are a great social opportunity and give all our students the chance to pass on their love of language and culture to fellow students from across the College, underpinning the multicultural and multilinguistic nature of St Brendan’s.

Masterclasses and talks by invited guest speakers are another feature of our enrichment programme. These  aim to promote and develop language skills, enhance cultural understanding and inform our students about the various options available to them when they leave. Guest speakers range from academics, people from various fields of employment to our own alumni, who are always very keen to come back and talk to our current students about their own experiences of work and further study.

Working with local schools

Passing on the love for other languages and cultures is a central part of the mission of our Language Centre. With the invaluable help of our language students we run a series of speaking practice workshops for GCSE language students in neighbouring secondary schools. These sessions have not only proven to be a very positive experience for our visitors, but as part of our enrichment programme continue to equip our language students with very important skills that will be so valuable to them in university, in job applications and in future employment.

Trips

As part of the enrichment programme, we organise a variety of trips.  These include film screenings, talks and workshops at local universities.

Language Ambassadors

Our students also have the opportunity to become Language Ambassadors if they wish to do so.   Language Ambassadors work with the teaching staff to help promote languages and organise our enrichment programme, contributing to whole college life.

This is a brilliant opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and take on responsibility while at College and looks good on University applications!

How to get involved

In September, at the beginning of the scholastic year, a letter with our planned enrichment calendar for the year is sent to our students/parents/carers.

We truly believe in the benefits of our enrichment programme for our students and we hope all our young people will make the most of the activities and opportunities available to them whilst they are at St Brendan’s.
