As the only Sixth Form College in the city, we are proud to offer an extensive Access to Level 3 programme to students.

Who is the course for?

The programme is designed for ambitious students who would like to study at Level 3 (A-levels, L3 BTECs, etc.) but have not yet met the entry requirements to do so.

Access to Level 3 is a fantastic pathway for students who need to spend some time building their skills and developing their confidence before taking the next step. Students have access to specialist subject teachers, fantastic facilities and extensive support from our Academic Mentors and Learning Development team.

Access to Level 3 is a one year programme and learners will study a bespoke timetable equivalent to 5 GCSEs. To access the programme, students need to have a minimum of 4 grade 3’s at GCSE including at least a grade 3 in English Language and Maths.

Building your timetable

We will ensure you are on a suitable programme which you’ll enjoy and that you are studying subjects which will help you achieve your end goals – whether it’s going on to university, an apprenticeship or the world of work.

Access to Level 3 subjects are designed with the future in mind and will continuously prepare you for A-level / Level 3 BTEC study throughout the 12 months. Having successfully completed the one-year access programme, the majority of students will continue to study the subject or a linked subject at the next level, however, this isn’t essential and you will be able to apply for any A-level courses when the time comes (depending on results after Access to Level 3).

Access to Level 3 provides an opportunity to study a mixture of both BTECs and GCSEs. If you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 in Maths or English Language whilst at school, you will be required to re-take these subjects on the Access to Level 3 programme.

This booklet gives more detail on the subjects that you can choose from to build your programme of study.

N.B. Pathway 2 & Pathway 4 will not be running in the next academic year (from September 2023).

What's next?

After completing the programme, most students will then continue their studies at St Brendan’s for a further 2 years, having achieved the entry requirements to access the College’s A-level / Level 3 programme. For those who decide not to continue at St Brendan’s, this programme provides a fantastic stepping stone to a range of other training and educational opportunities, which we will support you in achieving.
