This is a one year fast paced course covering separate science GCSE Biology. This course is suitable for those students who need to improve their science GCSE grade for their future study or career choices. Topics include cell biology, organisation, infection, bioenergetics, homeostasis, inheritance, variation and evolution and ecology. Students will also develop mathematical skills and practical skills.

Methods of Teaching and Learning

The course is taught by well qualified and experienced staff. Teaching methods mostly involve whole-class teaching, with discussions and group work. Students are expected to do a substantial amount of revision and practice outside the classroom.

Method of Assessment

This course is assessed by 2 written examinations, Paper 1 and Paper 2 in May/June. Throughout the course, the progress of each student is assessed and monitored by regular key assessments and mock examinations. There is also a requirement to carry out 10 required practicals throughout the year.

Resources

Dedicated, well-resourced science laboratories are used for lessons, where we have a range of textbooks and revision guides to complement the course. The college Learning Resource Centre (LRC) provides a well-stocked section of Biology books and access to online resources. Students are encouraged to buy a revision guide at the start of course.

Assessment

100% exams, based on topic content plus knowledge of scientific techniques, required practicals and mathematical skills.

What Next?

By improving their GCSE Biology grade, students can progress to level 3 courses, including:  A-level Biology, BTEC Applied Human Biology and A-level Psychology, subject to meeting entry requirements. Students have also gone on to study courses such as Primary Teaching and Nursing at university, which require a grade 4 or higher in a Science GCSE.
