The Level 3 Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A-level.

This two-year vocational course is suitable for students with a general interest in the work of the Protective Services, and those who are aiming to pursue a career in any of the uniformed protective service organisations, including the Emergency Services and Armed Forces.

The course requires participation in a variety of activities including a residential trip, desk based scenarios and other team building tasks. You will also study a wide range of topics to better understand the shifting roles and responsibilities of a diverse range of protective service organisations.

You will develop many work-related skills, including leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, communication, planning, decision-making, presentation skills and report writing.

Course Content

Unit 2 – Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed Protective Services

External 2 hour exam

Unit 13 – Introduction to Criminology

Internal assessment

Unit 5 – Teamwork, Leadership and Communication in the Uniformed Protective Services

Unit 10 – Skills for Outdoor Activities

Methods of Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The course is taught by well-qualified and experienced staff. Students will learn through a variety of methods including presentations, scenario based role play, project work and guest speakers. There is also a practical aspect to the course, as well as off-site visits.

It is also strongly advised that students are up to date and aware of National and World news and events concerning the Protective Services.

Methods of Assessment

Assessment is a mix of external examinations and internal coursework. Each internally assessed unit is made up of a variety of assessments methods, such as written assignments, presentations, reports, interviews or practical demonstrations. This, alongside the external exams contribute to a portfolio of evidence which will form a final overall grade which has A-level equivalent tariffs.

Resources

Students will have full use of the library and the careers information centre, which includes textbooks, journals, CDs and careers literature.

There is also a well-equipped gym for fitness training.

Associated Costs

All students will be charged for printing during the course. Contribution to the cost of outdoor activities and trips is expected to be approximately £150 over the 2 year course. Financial assistance may be available if required.

Progression

Higher Education

Many students go on to study related university courses such as Criminology, Policing Studies, Nursing, Paramedic Science, Forensic Science, Rescue and Emergency Management, Outdoor Adventure and Leadership Management, War Studies, Law, Coastal Safety Management, Psychology, Sociology and Politics.

Employment

Apprenticeships are available in the Protective Services e.g. Policing, Providing Security Services, Security Systems, H.M. Forces, Emergency Care and Fire Services Operations and the Youth Offending Team.  Previous students are pursuing careers in the Public Services, including the Army, RAF, Police, Paramedics and Fire and Rescue Services.
