A level Statistics is a great course for those that are interested in how mathematics applies in real-life contexts. Using your background in GCSE mathematics, you will be able to synthesise and interpret quantitative data while being able to contextualise your findings. You will use a combination of problem-solving skills and technology to collect and analyse real world data, looking for statistical patterns and meaningful conclusions. This course is ideal for those who want to study a numerate post 16 subject but do not wish to study pure mathematics. It sits well with subjects such as Biology, Psychology, Geography, Business Studies and Economics.

Course content

We use Pearson (Edexcel) exam board and there are three 2 hour written exams to be sat in June at the end of your study.

The exams are:

  • Data and Probability
  • Statistical Inference
  • Statistics in Practice

Content at a glance:

  • Numerical measures, graphs, and diagrams:

This involves understanding and using various statistical measures like mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and creating different types of graphs and diagrams to visualize data.

  • Probability and distributions:

Understanding concepts like conditional probability, independent events, and using probability rules to solve problems. Using different probability distributions, including Binomial, Normal and Poisson distributions.

  • Hypothesis testing:

This is how to formulate hypotheses, choose appropriate statistical tests and interpret the results to draw conclusions about populations based on sample data.

  • Data handling:

This includes understanding different types of data, sampling techniques and methods for collecting and analysing data.

  • Correlation and regression:

Analysing the relationship between variables and making predictions based on this relationship.

Enrichment

We encourage students to take opportunities within the college for STEM support and speakers. There are trips to university and other inspiration talks in Bristol. We also support students taking the Senior Maths Challenge.

Charges

All A level Statistics students will be required to have a graphical calculator. We recommend the Casio fx-CG50 or the fx-9750GII. You can purchase your own calculator or hire a Casio fx-9750GII from the college for £15. Note that financial assistance is available via the College Bursary Scheme.

Methods of teaching, learning and assessment

The course is taught by well qualified and dedicated staff. We will use a variety of teaching methods including investigations, class discussions, mini whiteboard activities and using technology to develop your statistics practice. The use of technology will include your graphical calculator, online graphing and processing software such as desmos, spreadsheet software and database systems. Your understanding and progress will be check at regular times using key assessments and you will be required to carry out a project using the Statistical Enquiry Cycle (SEC).

Resources

We will use printed topic booklets to assist with the delivery of the course. You will be expected to bring stationary which must include (but is not limited to): pens, pencils, ruler, mini whiteboard pens and an A4 folder.

Progression

A level Statistics will provide you with a highly transferable set of skill that have applications for many forms of degrees or careers including (but not limited to): Psychology, Business Studies, Economics, Accountancy, Geography, Biology and Anthropology.
