Progress Tutors

Your Progress Tutor is your main point of contact throughout your time at St Brendan's. They will support you from your first day at College and guide you towards achieving your personal best, both academically and personally.

What is the Progress Tutor team?

Every student at St Brendan’s is assigned a Progress Tutor. Progress Tutors are experienced members of staff who provide consistent support, guidance and oversight throughout a student’s journey at College.

Progress Tutors were previously known as Academic Mentors, and their role is to help students settle in, stay on track and develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in sixth‑form education.

What services do Progress Tutors offer?

Progress Tutors aim to empower students to take responsibility for their learning while offering guidance and support when challenges arise.

Support includes:

  • Helping students settle into College life
  • Monitoring academic progress and attendance
  • Discussing personal or academic concerns
  • Supporting positive study habits and organisation
  • Acting as an advocate where students may need extra guidance

Students will meet with their Progress Tutor as part of a tutor group and through scheduled one‑to‑one meetings.

Preparing students for a successful future

A key part of the Progress Tutor role is helping students prepare for the next stage of their journey.

During tutorials and one‑to‑ones, students are supported to explore and plan for:

  • University
  • Apprenticeships
  • Employment
  • Gap years and other progression routes

The tutorial programme focuses on personal development and planning so that students leave St Brendan’s with a clearer understanding of themselves and the options available to them after sixth form college.

Working with parents & carers

We recognise the important role that parents and carers play in supporting young people.

Parents and carers are encouraged to contact a student’s Progress Tutor if they have concerns about progress, attendance or wellbeing. Progress Tutors act as a key point of communication between College and home, alongside respecting students’ growing independence in a post‑16 setting.
