This BTEC Level 2 course provides a good foundation for students wanting to access Level 3 BTEC Law. The course will give a good overview of the legal system, police powers and aspects of criminal law.

Students do not need to have previously studied Law to enrol on the course.

Course Content

The Pearson BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Law is a 13-credit qualification. You will study the following units during the 1 year of study on the course:

  • The English Legal System
  • Police and their Powers
  • Legal Requirements for Business Formation
  • Criminal Law and Procedure
  • Aspects of Consumer Protection Law and Practice
  • Aspects of Family Welfare Law and Practice
  • Aspects of Law Making

Methods of Assessment

All units within the course are internally assessed - 100% coursework based. 

Teaching and Learning

Teaching methods include lectures, case studies, discussions in large and small groups and occasional presentations by students; there are also opportunities to visit the courts and hear from guest speakers.

Students are expected to do some background reading, to make their own detailed notes and to write essay answers to past exam questions.

Enrichment

Opportunities to visit Bristol Law Courts and a law library to learn how to research law. Guest speakers from international law firms and barristers chambers often visit the College to speak with students.

Progression

Many Students will continue their study of Law at Level 3. Students then progress on to study Criminology, Social Work or other related degrees at university. You may wish to pursue a career in Legal Services as either a Police Officer, Legal Executive, Para Legal or Legal Secretary.
