Last year, St Brendan’s Sixth Form College proudly shared Cassie’s journey from the Student Union to the Sutton Trust Fulbright US Programme – a highly competitive initiative that empowers young people from underrepresented backgrounds to access life‑changing opportunities. Now, we’re delighted to celebrate the next chapter of her incredible story.

Through the Sutton Trust Fulbright US Programme, Cassie spent last summer immersed in American culture, gaining first‑hand experience of life in the United States while developing the skills and confidence needed to apply to top US universities. Throughout this time, Cassie continued to receive dedicated support at home, with St Brendan’s Sixth Form College and the Sutton Trust helping her navigate the challenging application process.

In September, Cassie attended a Sutton Trust ‘college day’ in London, where she learned more about US universities and the admissions process. It was here that Cassie met an admissions officer from Denison University - a meeting she describes as a real turning point.

“Speaking to the Denison admissions officer helped me realise I’d found ‘the one’,” Cassie explained.

Cassie submitted her application to Denison in October, keeping her expectations grounded due to Denison’s highly competitive acceptance rate of just 17%. However, her hard work, determination and ambition paid off. Cassie was offered a place - alongside a full scholarship covering tuition, housing, food and all living expenses.

Currently an undecided major, Cassie is considering studying History as part of a double major and already has her sights set on further opportunities, including a study year abroad. She is also excited about fully embracing American campus life and hopes to join a sorority.

Reflecting on the achievement, Cassie said:

“I’m so excited, I feel like I’ve won the lottery! It sounds cliché, but it goes to show you can do anything if you put your mind to it – I really want to encourage more people to apply for similar programmes and experiences.”

Cassie’s success highlights the power of aspiration, hard work and access to the right support. Her journey is a powerful example of what St Brendan’s Sixth Form College students can achieve - and we hope it inspires others to explore programmes like the Sutton Trust Fulbright US Programme and dream beyond borders.
