FAQs and Key Information
Beginning further education is a big thing - we know you'll have lots of questions for us before your Taster Day! You will find a list of commonly asked questions below.
What are the timings for the day?
Please aim to arrive by 9:15am. Lessons will run until 1:30pm.
After this, you will have the option to stay for an additional 45 minutes to speak with staff as part of our Course Advice and Careers Guidance offer.
There will also be Taster Day Sport Training Sessions available from 2:00pm to 3:00pm.
Do I need to attend both days?
No, you only have to attend one of the days.
Can I bring a parent?
No, this is a student only event and means you will have opportunity to meet your teachers and other students who will be studying the same subjects as you.
What should I bring with me?
Please bring a notepad and a pen for taking notes in lessons. You can also bring your own lunch or purchase food/drink in our Cafes. Prices start from £1.00 upwards and our Cafes are cashless.
Will there be any summer tasks?
During each lesson, you will be provided with the summer tasks you must complete and bring back with you to the first week of lessons. These summer tasks are essential preparation for you feeling prepared and settled into College life and also your subjects.
What can I wear?
There is no College uniform so wear clothes you feel comfortable in – please ensure they are appropriate for College and if you are taking part in a sports lesson or lunchtime sport session, please wear practical clothes and the correct footwear. On the 3G pitch (rugby and football), users must wear footwear with moulded studs, astro trainers or sports trainers. On the MUGA courts (netball), users must wear trainers only.
What will happen if I don’t get the grades needed for one of my options?
During your interview, you will have discussed the entry criteria required for particular subjects. If you don’t achieve the grades needed, we will need to review all your other grades and advise on alternative options. We do this as part of your enrolment, so you should still attend your enrolment appointment which will be sent out to you in July.
Can I change one of my subjects?
Yes – we’ll be running a Course Advice & Careers Guidance Drop‑In where you can speak to staff about your programme of study and how your courses link to future plans such as university, apprenticeships, or employment. If you’re considering a change, staff will explain your options and support you in submitting a course change request, which will be reviewed after the event alongside your predicted grades to ensure it’s the right choice for you. Please note some of our subjects are now over-subscribed so you may have to join a waitlist for the subject you wish to change to but we can let you know about this.
Will the College bus routes be running during the Taster Days?
There will be a pick-up/drop-off point on site, however, this car park has limited capacity so we would encourage you to use public transport or pick-up/drop-off off site. Please note our SB bus services (SB1, SB2, SB4, SB5, SB6 & SB7) will not be running on the day but you can see the other routes available by clicking here.
I have moved house, how do I update my contact details?
Please email applicationadmin@stbrn.ac.uk with your updated contact details so we can change these on student record system. This will also ensure you receive the most up-to-date information and don’t miss anything important!
