BTEC Public Services
BTEC Level 2 Public Services are practical, applied courses for students who are interested in the work of uniformed public services such as the emergency services and the armed forces. You’ll explore how public service organisations operate while developing teamwork, leadership and problem‑solving skills. You can choose from a course worth the equivalent of two or three GCSE’s.

The course is made up of several units from the Pearson BTEC Level 2 Public Services specification, which may include:
The Role and Work of Public Services – understanding different organisations and their responsibilities
Citizenship, Society and Public services – how services support communities
Health, Fitness and Lifestyle for public services – preparing for service roles
Sport & Recreation in the Public Services – working practically to improve health and fitness
Crime & its Effects on Society & Individuals – how crime is reported and dealt with

You’ll learn through a wide range of teaching methods, including whole‑class lessons, group and individual work, presentations, scenario‑based role play and independent study. The course includes practical sessions and talks from external speakers working within the public services.
Assessment follows national BTEC guidelines and includes:
Internally assessed coursework, such as written assignments, presentations and practical demonstrations
Externally assessed units set by Pearson
You’ll receive regular feedback to help you understand your progress and identify how to improve throughout the course.
Access to library resources, including textbooks and eBooks
Use of a well‑equipped gymnasium for fitness training
Careers Centre support for public service and uniformed service pathways
During the course, students will be charged for printing and asked to contribute towards the cost of compulsory expeditions and day trips, which form a valuable and essential part of learning.
The course includes:
A compulsory overnight camping expedition
An additional day walking expedition
Students are expected to bring their own ring‑binder folder for organising work. Further details about costs can be provided by the specialist Public Services teaching team.
There are no restricted subject combinations. Your overall programme will be discussed during guidance to make sure it supports your goals.
BTEC Level 2 Public Services supports progression to:
