We know our students are a talented bunch and love to hear all about their achievements outside of the classroom as well as inside.

This week, we caught up with Daniella Phillips, who introduced us to the fascinating world of Dragon Boat Racing.

A packed timetable of A-level Politics, Sociology and Public Services isn’t quite enough for the determined second year student, who discovered her love for her sport when she was in her early teens. A keen kayaker from age 12, Daniella tried out Dragon Boat Racing with her Scouts group and never looked back.

The mixed-gender sport, which originates from China, involves a group of between 18 – 20 paddlers using a mixture of skill and strength to race. Now a part of the Under 24’s GB team, the 18 year old explained how she trains almost every day of the week with her Saltford-based team ‘Bristol Empire Dragons’ and is travelling across the globe with her sport.

After returning from the European Championships in Germany with 3 bronze medals, Daniella and her team now have their sights set firmly on Thailand success. The World Championships will be based in Thailand this year and Daniella will be travelling on the 12th August to acclimatise and train prior to the big races – something she is of course hugely excited about.

After returning back to the UK, hopefully with medals to her name, Daniella plans to study Occupational Therapy at Cardiff University, as well as continuing to race alongside her teammates! We look forward to hearing all about Daniella’s GB experiences this summer!
