How St Brendan's Students Celebrated Black History Month Through Poetry, Sport, Art and Wellbeing

23 Oct 2026

Throughout October, students and staff at St Brendan's Sixth Form College came together to celebrate Black History Month through a diverse programme of activities focused on culture, identity, creativity, wellbeing and community. The month provided opportunities for students to learn, reflect and engage with important conversations while celebrating the achievements, contributions and experiences of Black communities.

A range of events took place across the college, encouraging students to explore different perspectives and express themselves through creativity. Students were invited to take part in our Black History Month Poetry Competition, themed Honouring Our Communities, which encouraged entries celebrating the people, places and cultures that shape our lives. The Students' Union also organised a Black History Month Art Workshop, giving students the chance to celebrate Black history and culture through creative expression.

One of the highlights of the month was a special Black History Month x World Mental Health Day event. Students heard from Matt Hudd, owner of Trojan Gym, who shared his experiences and reflections on topics including pressure, stigma, mental health, learning from mistakes and having the confidence to change direction. His honest and engaging talk encouraged students to think openly about wellbeing and resilience.

We were also delighted to welcome back Ryan, a former St Brendan's student, who spoke about Black men's mental health and the importance of creating spaces where people feel able to talk, seek support and share their experiences. Together, the talks reinforced the importance of breaking down barriers, challenging stigma and looking after our mental wellbeing.

Students also had the opportunity to learn from Bristol City Poet Sukina Noor, who delivered an inspiring poetry workshop as part of our enrichment programme. Through an exploration of the work of Black British and Bristol-based poets, students reflected on themes of identity, home, belonging and the celebration of culture, while developing their own creative writing skills.

Across the college, students engaged with displays celebrating Black sporting heroes, recognising the achievements, heritage and legacies of influential athletes who have helped shape the world of sport. Black History Month celebrations also extended to our Sports Festival, where students participated in activities promoting teamwork, inclusion and participation. Staff and students were also encouraged to Wear Red to Show Racism the Red Card, standing together against racism and discrimination. Through a bake sale, our college community also raised £150 for The Cause, a community organisation dedicated to driving positive change.

Black History Month is an important opportunity to celebrate the richness and diversity of our communities while continuing conversations about equality, representation and belonging. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to this year's programme of events and workshops, helping to create a memorable and meaningful experience for our students.
