Exploring a new pathway after GCSEs
From September 2027, students will be able to choose from three distinct Level 3 pathways:
A Levels, T Levels, and the new V Levels.
Vocational Levels have been introduced as a new vocational route, designed to give students greater flexibility and choice while developing the knowledge and skills needed for future success.
At St Brendan's Sixth Form College, we believe there is no single definition of success. The right course is the one that challenges you, inspires you and helps you take confident steps towards your future.
What are V levels?
V Levels are a new family of Level 3 vocational qualifications being introduced across England from September 2027.
They have been designed for students who want to develop practical, career-relevant knowledge and skills while keeping a wide range of progression opportunities open. They are intended to simplify the qualification landscape and make it easier for students and families to understand their options. Each V Level will be equivalent in size to one A Level, allowing students to build programmes of study that reflect their interests, strengths and future goals.
In summary, V levels are:
- Level 3 vocational qualifications
- Equivalent in size to one A Level
- Flexible enough to combine with A Levels
- Aligned to broad career sectors
- A recognised route to higher education, apprenticeships and employment
Understanding the post-16 landscape
One of the biggest challenges facing students and parents is understanding the different pathways available after GCSEs.
From 2027, the post-16 landscape will be built around three clear routes:
A levels: the academic route
A Levels are ideal for students who enjoy academic study, independent research and exploring subjects in depth. They remain a popular pathway to university and higher education.
T levels: the technical route
T Levels combine classroom learning with substantial industry placements. They are designed for students who have a clear interest in a specific career area and want extensive workplace experience as part of their studies.
V levels: the vocational route
V Levels provide a broader vocational pathway. They allow students to explore a sector, develop industry-relevant skills and keep future options open, particularly if they are not yet ready to specialise in a specific occupation.
Why have V levels been introduced?
V Levels aim to provide:
- Clearer progression routes
- Greater flexibility
- Stronger recognition from universities and employers
- Opportunities to combine academic and vocational study
- High-quality vocational learning that has equal value alongside other pathways
What subjects will be available?
At St Brendan's, we are aiming to run V Levels in Digital Systems and Data and Finance and Accounting.
