You will study the AQA GCSE English Language qualification in one year, covering the following papers:

Paper 1 – Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing

Section A (Reading): One literature fiction text

Section B (Writing): Descriptive or narrative writing

Paper 2 – Writers’ Viewpoints and Perspectives

Section A (Reading): One non‑fiction text and one literary non‑fiction text

Section B (Writing): Writing to present a viewpoint

Speaking and Listening (coursework)

You may need to complete the speaking and listening assessment if this was not completed at your previous place of study

Skills you will develop

Reading and analysing a variety of fiction and non‑fiction texts

Writing clearly and confidently for different purposes

Planning and structuring extended written responses

Spoken communication and discussion skills

Independent learning and revision strategies

This course focuses strongly on individual improvement, particularly in areas of reading and writing that you find challenging. You will be encouraged to create an individual learning plan, review progress regularly and set realistic targets.

Teaching methods include:

Writing analytical answers, stories, essays, leaflets, letters and speeches

Reading a wide range of fiction and non‑fiction extracts

Discussing texts and ideas in pairs, small groups and whole‑class activities

Oral assessment

You will complete a variety of oral assessments throughout the course. These may be formal or informal and can sometimes take place without notice. Your tutor may assess discussion or group work during lessons.

An oral grade will be awarded

This grade is reported separately from your final GCSE grade

Written assessment and exam entry

You may be eligible to enter the November GCSE English Language re‑sit

You will be assessed at the start of the course

This assessment helps decide whether November or June entry is most suitable for you

A suitable bag to carry A4 work without folding

There are no restricted subject combinations. Your overall ATL3 programme will be discussed to ensure it supports your progression plans.
